Woman’s Day …..9 August 2011

On the 9 August – Tuesday, we get to enjoy a public holiday.

If you are anything like me you take a public holiday with a sigh of relief and seldom give much thought to why it is there.

In case you did not know:  This day commemorates 9 August 1956 when women participated in a national march to petition against pass laws (legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’).

Very cool – very cool we get a day off.

Maybe cooler if we gave it some thought on the day.  I know I need to.  I enjoyed this piece if you are interested.

The only reason I “remembered:” that Women’s Day was on the calendar, was that Kennith forwarded me an internal email of a campaign the clever folks at Cape Union Mart are running.

Kennith’s company came up with such a great initiative to raise awareness and money for the day, I whooped when I saw it and thought I would share it with you.

This is of no benefit what so ever to you unless you work at Cape Union Mart, but how cool are these guys with this idea:

I seriously want to “high five” Cape Union Mart on this idea:

Ladies and Gentlemen, August is on the horizon, and you know what that means… A public holiday and an entire month, to celebrate and empower women.

Women’s Day will be commemorated on 9 August around the country, but on Friday 5 August 2011, Cape Union Mart Head Office will be celebrating with a very special event.

THE WOMEN’S DAY MAN AUCTION!!

Yes, thats right! 9 brave men have decided to put themselves on auction, where you can bid to have them at your beck and call for the entire week.

Services such as personalised cooking lessons, one on one Muaythai sessions, freshly baked goods every morning on your desk and even a porter service to and from your car every single day will be up for grabs.

All money raised will be matched by Cape Union Mart, and will go to POWA (People Opposing Woman Abuse). So let’s get  bidding and have some fun!   Details below:

Date:        Friday 5 August 2011

Time:        14h00

Venue:      Canteen

Bring:        Bidding money (bidding will take place in increments of between R2 and R10)

More information to follow early next week! See you on the 5th!

How cool is that for a company initiative?  Very cool.
